Themed Arts and Humanities Program to be Presented in Chillicothe
Friday, October 27, 2006,
Chillicothe C-TThe residents of Chillicothe will have the opportunity to enjoy a unique program “Voices of American Farm Women, Past and Present” at the Livingston County Library from Nov. 8-18.
The program will incorporate visual and performing arts, literature, philosophy and historical elements all focused on the theme of women in agriculture, according to Martha Greer, director of the Chillicothe Area Arts Council. All events are free and open to the public and will include activities and programs for adults and families.
A 30-piece black and white photography exhibit, Voices of American Farm Women, by photographer Cynthia Vagnetti documents women from across the United States whose farming techniques promote environmental responsibility, economic stability, and community well being. The exhibit weaves together the power of image and word by featuring selections from oral history interviews conducted with the subject of Vagnetti's work. The exhibit conveys strong opinions on many topics and dispels many misconceptions about women who work the land. The exhibit will be open from Nov. 8-18 during library hours.
At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, Debbie Peel of the Livingston County Library will present an interpretive program based on the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House Books. Peel is a resident expert of Laura Ingalls Wilder and enjoys the opportunity to present her program to audiences of all ages.
Judy Domeny Bowen will present a story-telling song program on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. Her repertoire will include traditional Ozark folk and farm songs. Bowen has been a teacher for more than 20 years and is a member of The Missouri Folklore Society. She grew up on a farm in Rogersville, Mo., and entertained herself singing folk songs. Fascinated by the stories within songs, she developed a repertoire of hundreds of Ozark folk songs. Her program will also feature original compositions recalling her experiences growing up, living and working on a farm. In addition to her appearance at the library, Bowen will visit two local nursing homes to perform her program and engage in a discussion with the residents.
